SMOKE FIRING is a low tech, low temp method of making marks on the surface of clay. It is as primitive as the cave woman and yields rich, warm results....the look of an artefact. There will be demonstrations on burnishing, mark making on the clay surface, post firing treatments and smoke resists. It’s a full day and fun.
THINGS TO BRING:
*4-6 burnished and bisqued pieces. Any type, colour and temp of clay will work. “Burnishing” means to polish the piece with the back of a spoon or a smooth stone in the later stage of drying. A high shine isn’t necessary. We’re just going for a smooth surface. Bisque to any temperature.
*4-6 burnished and bisqued tiles...they don’t have to be square...just flatish.
*Some paints (watercolour, acrylic or oil) in the colours of your choice.
*A few paint brushes of various sizes.
*Shoe polish,,,the coloured ones are nice
*Some sm yoghurt tubs.
*A clean rag....t-shirt types or cotton
*Masking or painters tape
*A Notebook
*A lawn chair. Louise has a few but not enough for everyone.
*Kiln gloves
*Ceramic pencils
If you don’t have all of these items...don’t worry, we’ll share.
Directions: you may be able to lift directions from Pentz Gallery website.
From highway 103, take exit 12, Bridgewater. Turn left and go into town. At Aberdeen, turn right and go down the hill and across the bridge. Turn left and you're on King street. Follow it out of town and it becomes Highway 331. Drive for about 13km. You'll pass the Pentz school on the right. Go about 1/4 mile and there's a road on the left that takes you down toward the river. That's Pentz Rd....go about 1km and you'll come to #190 (there’s a red bldg on the left). Ours is the white house with green trim across the rd..
If you're coming from the Lunenburg area, take the ferry across the river and turn right. The Pentz Rd turn off is about 1 mile up the river ...just hug the coastline. The house is about the 7th house in from that end of the road.
If you would like to carpool, let us know and we'll try to hook you up with someone near you.
You can take a look around the gallery if you like, and then come up behind the house to the studio...that's where all the action will happen. Come about 9:30 and there will be time to chat, look around and gather orders for the bakery and place our order for lunches (for those who wish to order). We'll begin at 10:00 and finish by about 4:00pm. We'll be outside all afternoon so dress accordingly. You'll smell like smokey the bear when we're finished!
