Devon House Craft Gallery, St. John's, Newfoundland,
May 12 - June 10

Join us for the opening reception of Dessert Party May 12 from 2-4pm for a celebration of the sweet things in life.

Fanciful food presentation takes centre stage in this ceramic show by Lucky Rabbit potters Debra Kuzyk and Ray Mackie.

Celebrating the sweet things in life, this show features all manner of ceramic goodies for food presentation as well as accessories such as flower vases.  Lucky Rabbit potters Debra Kuzyk and Ray Mackie are focusing on the role of dessert in the presentation of food.  Lucky Rabbit's fanciful motifs and exuberant colors will be used to enhance and embellish the presentation of sweets, cakes, pastries, frozen desserts, teas, and coffees.

Deb and Ray create functional pottery inspired by historical ceramics with a contemporary twist. Their work is highly decorative, with a strong sense of color and pattern including images of local flora and fauna. The new work features many motifs found on historical Chinese porcelain. The pots are objects to be enjoyed on their own, and they become functionally activated through use in a culinary environment. For this exhibition, Deb and Ray take inspiration from the celebratory role of dessert in the presentation of food.  Forms will include cake savers, cookie jars, platters and plates, teapots, cups and saucers, as well as accessories such as flower vases.  Desserts and coffee will be served at the opening, featuring some of the works from the exhibition.

After many years spent studying art, pottery, and other subjects at various universities and colleges, Ray and Deb met in Newfoundland, and began a lifelong collaboration. To date they have been working together for over 20 years, and have supported themselves exclusively for the past 13 years by producing Lucky Rabbit Pottery, working in their home and studio in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. They each have their own area of expertise within the collaboration – Ray creates forms by throwing on the potter’s wheel and working with wet slabs of porcelain. He is also the technical expert, doing the glaze chemistry, firing, and photography. Deb is the exuberant and playful decorator, who also sculpts the small animal figures.
