Session 2 Call for Entry: A conversation with Brandt Eisner, Photography and more

We will have our second session on how to navigate a Call for Entry. Here’s a little note from Brandt Eisner on what we can expect next week:

"After our last session there was a lot of interest in further discussion around photographing work. It was suggested participants submit photos of their work for feedback. I invite you to send 2 or 3 images to Sheri White - sheri@urnsongpottery.com with the subject line: Call for Entry - session 2 photos.

As a group we’ll identify what is a good photo and what is a so-so photo. This will also be a good opportunity for those who missed the last meeting, or anyone who has had questions or comments since, to ask any lingering questions about submitting to calls for submissions or submitting a proposal.

Depending on our time I’ll also touch on the voice of the artisan. What does your work say and how is it identifiable?

Thanks, Brandt"

Register in advance for this meeting: Oct 12, 2023 7-9 pm

Call for Entry: A conversation with Brandt Eisner

Call for Entry - A How-to On Getting Ready for That First, or 31st, Show

Spend some time with Brandt Eisner, artist and curator, to learn about the how to’s of preparing for that next or first show. Through a series of info sessions and Q&A’s, Brandt will help us navigate a call for entry and understand what makes a good submission.

As we explore the multiple steps from Expressions of Interest, to Call out, through to making your work and then making the submission, no questions will be too small to cover in these conversations with Brandt. Brandt will also answer questions around CV’s, artist statements, and what makes a good photograph.

Interested? Join us on September 11th from 7-9 pm for the first in a series of discussions with Brandt via zoom. These are free events for current members of the NSPG.

Counting Crows

Counting Crows

A Themed Group Exhibit at The Fraser Gallery in Tatamagouche by Five for Silver, a group of artists hailing from the Halifax area:  Painters, Heather CroutDenise SoperColleen Underwood, and Potter/Ceramicists, Judy Gordon and Shauna MacLeod.

"One Crow for Sorrow" is how it begins. There are various versions of this rhyme, and each line and "crow" tells a story. Collectively, we are intrigued by the ideas to be explored, each one holding its own nuance. Each piece in this exhibit tells an aspect of that story - From sorrow to joy, silver and gold, wishes and kisses and secrets, never to be told...

Originally scheduled for the summer of 2020, this exhibit opened on Friday, July 9th with a reception at The Fraser in Tatamagouche. Each artist has created work inspired by different versions of the crow rhyme to delight the eye and surprise the viewer.

Creatures from Somewhere

Visual Voice Fine Art is proud to reopen with two exciting solo shows: 'Creatures from Somewhere' sculptures by Nancy Roberts AND 'The Turning Point' paintings by Paulette Melanson.
The pandemic and social issues affect us all in different ways, from escapism to wanting to take control of our future. This is made evident in this exhibit were both artists had opposite reactions. Despite their different approaches, the resulting combined show is visually appealing and cohesive.
Paulette Melanson wants for things to change for the better and her aim with this new body of work was to inspire hope, encourage optimism and empower change. 'The Turning Point' is her first all abstract solo, bright, colorful, and as optimistic and happy as the artist intended.

Nancy Roberts lost her inspiration and will to create as galleries closed and exhibits cancelled during Covid. Forced to continue she began by gripping the clay and playing with her medium, which gave rise to creatures that seemed to come alive and were at home in these strange times we are living.
'Creatures from Somewhere' is dynamic, playful, and proves that any situation can breathe new life and creativity into us. See the exhibits online here: visual-voice.ca/exhibit
Join us online for a FREE Artist TALK on Jun 23, 7:00 PM
At : whereby.com/visual-voiceDrop by the Visual Voice Fine Art gallery to view these two concurrent shows and be inspired. The show starts June 14 and continues to July 10.

The Birds and the Bees

For real..jpg

Show Statement

The Nova Scotia Potters Guild Presents The Birds and the Bees

At the Potters Guild`s AGM in 2018 it was announced there was going to be an application for a show at The Craig gallery. The membership was asked for some theme ideas and a few suggestions were blurted out. When someone suggested “The Birds and The Bees” as our theme, a few people snickered, but you could feel the excitement grow. Written in poetry and song, in jest and all-seriousness, the phrase evokes images far and wide. Our members were encouraged to think outside the box, challenge their creativity and create work that inspires and responds to the phrase.  The Nova Scotia Potters Guild would like to present to you our 2019 members group show.

The Nova Scotia Potters Guild show includes a wide range of artists from beginners to masters, hobbyists to production potters, educators and technicians.  Each exploring clay in their own way. We are pleased to see our members create such variety of work including sculpture, functional, wall pieces and raku, just to name a few.

The Nova Scotia Potters Guild was founded in 1991 by 13 potters who wanted to learn and teach and enjoy one another’s company. Twenty-eight years on, the Guild remains the main organization for the local ceramic community. As such we strive to be the crossroads for potters and a resource on making, displaying, teaching, and learning our art and craft.

Today both the Guild’s membership and its mission have expanded. There are now over 150 members from across the province. The NSPG focuses on education, training, exhibitions, resources, mentorship, and acts as an advocate for clay in the province.

The Birds and The Bees will be the guild`s 5th group exhibition and we have previously shown in locations such as The Craig Gallery, Government House, Swoon Fine Art, and The Mary E. Black Gallery.

Woven Woods, featuring the work of NSPG member Toni Losey

Patterns of Growth - Toni Losey
Woven Woods - Lorraine Roy

Mary E. Black Gallery

1061 Marginal Rd. Suite 140, Halifax, NS
Opening: Thursday July 4, 6pm
On view: July 5 - August 25, 2019
FREE ADMISSION
Tuesday - Friday: 9am - 5pm
Saturday & Sunday: 11am - 4pm

The Mary E Black invites you to the opening reception for two side-by-side exhibitions of new bodies of work --Patterns of Growthby Halifax-based ceramicist Toni Losey andWoven Woodsby textile artist Lorraine Roy from Southwestern Ontario.

These two interlinked exhibitions explore the relationship of organic forms. Toni Losey, with her experimental and innovative wheel-turned shapes, creates anamorphic structures layered with thick skins of glaze. The sculptures inPatterns of Growthlook soft to the touch but are in fact encrusted with hard texture and nodules. They seem to jump to life reaching their multiple ambiguous appendages outwards and upwards into the air around them.

Lorraine Roy renders ecosystems from fabric and thread inWoven Woods, each circular quilt is an enclosed story of an interconnected forest. Guided by her horticultural background Roy uses textiles to illustrate her research into the “exquisitely balanced symbiotic relationship between mycorrhizal fungi and tree roots”. Writing beautifully about the subject of her work she says “in the top six inches of the forest floor lies a vast and flourishing communication system as old as photosynthesis itself.”

There is a lightness to the works from both Roy and Losey that plays off one another through their organic shapes, colors and textures. Each artist, working in entirely different media, evokes an intelligent natural world with which we are in an ever evolving relationship.

The opening reception forWoven WoodsandPatterns of Growthwill be at the Mary E. Black Gallery on Thursday July 4 at 6 pm with opening remarks at 6:30. Both artists will be present. Along side these exhibits we will also be celebrating the launch of Tyshan Wright’s Craft LAIR residency.

Thanks to the Ontario Arts Council/Conseil Des Arts De L'Ontario for supporting the creation of Lorraine Roy's body of work in Woven Woods.
